Subject:NEW US STANDARDS FOR NUTRITION FACTS LABELLING ON FOOD PRODUCTS
Dear Valued IFEX Clients:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released new standards for Nutrition Facts labeling on packaged foods. The standards include more prominent displays for calories and updated information regarding serving sizes that reflect what people are likely to eat in one serving. The labeling changes will also include new or updated Daily Values, including mandatory declarations for vitamin D and potassium.
The 943-page document, published in the Federal Register, also provides updated information that is consistent with current data on the associations between nutrients and chronic diseases, health-related conditions, physiological endpoints, and/or maintaining a healthy dietary pattern. For the full view, please visit, http://federalregister.gov/a/2016-11867 or FDsys.gov.
The final rule becomes effective on July 26, 2016, while the compliance date of this final rule is July 26, 2018 for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales and July 26, 2019 for manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales.
